Wasp Island Group
by mlforrester on 20-Apr-2009

Has anyone visited Yellow Island in the San Juans (Washington State)? It is owned by the Nature Conservancy and is open to the public. There is no Marina, no buoys, and it looks like fairly poor anchorage right around the island itself. Any info would be appreciated.

Yellow Island

I've never visited Yellow Island, but have motored through the Wasp Group many times. You are right about no marinas, no public bouys and unprotected anchorage. The current is fast as alot of water funnels through Wasp Passage and San Juan Channel gets alot of traffic so there are always wakes and waves from that direction. Maybe the Nature Conservancy would let you use one of their mooring bouys for a short visit. Easy and relatively protected access would be to tie up at the Deer Harbor Marina (360) 376-3037 and take the dingy over for a visit (1.9 miles). Or use the mooring bouys at Jones Island State Park (1.2 miles) Then you could pull right up on the beach. I'll bet the wildflowers are beautiful right now.

We have dinghied over from Jones Is. Used the SE cove where the mooring bouys are. There are restrictions but the flowers are great and worth it. Enjoy, Tom

Monday reservations

Thanks M.L. Forrester. Because of your post I did a little web sleuthing, found their local info and made reservations to check out Yellow Island on Monday. It's supposed to be a bit cloudy, but the tides and currents are easy. So I'll give ya my firsthand impression after Monday. Hopefully I'll get some nice pics, too!
