SF to Channel Islands (Santa Barbara)
by emagin on 06-May-2010

Hello, am heading south on a smaller boat, Ranger 23 and was wondering if any of you have good waypoints and information about anchorages, wifi, and such along the CA coast. Of particular interest would be Monterey Bay Morro Bay Port San Luis Cojo Anchorage Santa Barbara San Miguel Island Santa Rosa Island Anacapa Island (permits and such)

I know the deal about Pt. Conception, timing and such, was more interested in specifics to add to my CE maps as annotations. Thank you!

I just completed a San Diego to Seattle trip arriving May 8th. I used Coastal Explorer with waypoints and routes from Don Douglas's book 'San Diego to Seattle'. Also had the two strip maps that go along with the book. These are from Fine Edge Publishing. Worked like a charm. Really nice to have all of the harbor entrance way points. We did not go into San Fran. Instead filled up at Halfmoon Bay.

I was really surprise at how good the cell phone coverage was along the coast. Even 10-15 miles offshore. Didn't need VHF weather. Got every thing from the iphone. We used an iphone app to query the offshore weather buoys along our course. I really recommend having that available.

We rounded Pt. Conception at 10:00 AM in mild conditions one mile off. No problems. Of course we were on a 58' powerboat so wouldn't expect too many problems.

Our only stop along this route was Santa Barbara where we spent two days waiting out a storm. Loved Santa Barbara. While we didn't go into Port San Luis that was one of our bailouts. So I had called them and discussed mooring buoys. Check out their website. Has many useful links with information about the area.
