Very slow Day/Dusk/Night switching

A few customers have reported problems when switching between Day, Dusk and Night modes. The symptoms of this problem appear as very slow switching between these modes. Sometimes a customer will interpret this as the software having hung. It can take anywhere between 5 minutes to half an hour for this switch to take place when this problem is occurring.

We have determined that this is due, at least in some cases, to anti-virus software interfering with the process of changing system colors. Some viruses, in order to illicit panic in Windows users, will do various things that make it appear that the computer is broken or damaged in some way. One way a virus can accomplish this is by making the computer appear to be doing bizzare things, such as the screen changing colors wildly. They can achieve this by altering the system colors. At least one virus scanner, Norton 360, impacts our ability to change sytem colors.

If you notice this happening to you, you should first try disabling your virus scanner to see if this fixes the problem. If it does, many virus scanners allow you to create an exception that prevents it paying attention to Coastal Explorer. Minimally, you should set an exception for Coastal Explorer's executable which, unless you've installed Coastal Explorer 2009 in a non-standard location, will be at the following location on your hard-drive:

C:\Program Files\Coastal Explorer\Chart.exe

Unfortunately, not all anti-virus programs allow you to disable the software, and some that do don't disable completely. If the problem persists after disabling the virus scanner, you can try uninstalling it from the Windows control panel.

If you find a virus scanner, besides Norton 360, where the problem occurs, please let us know so we can include it in the list of problem scanners. Also, if you use Norton 360 and you notice the problem still occurs after disabling or uninstallation, let us know that too; we want to know all the circumstances where the color problem can occur.

Virus Scanners known to exhibit this problem (this doesn't mean others don't)
