Firefox.... not ie,
by solomon320 on 31-Mar-2010

Good Morning all!

I have researched the Coastal Explorer Network connection problems area and it directs me to Internet Explorer, and making sure it is set to "on-line" mode. I would like to know if Firefox is compatible with CE? I do not use IE to many security flaws in my opinion. I am having troubles connecting to the CE Network servers, I cannot get to the weather or any of the other things that require connection. I have checked my firewall and that is ok I have an exception to allow CE to pass I am behind a router but that is not an issue I am sure. Any help would be appreciated ..... errr upon further checking I believe I can connect to CE Network(allthough I do not have a subscription) I cannot connect to Rose Point Navigation system... at this time via ----> help--->check for updates.

Thanks for your time and effort

Hi Sol,

I use firefox all the time. Have done for a couple of years, getting all regular updates as they come. We are an IE free household!!. I have not found any specific problems with FF and CE net, but I am having a problem getting photo's to upload to CE.net. Whether or not this is down to Firefox I have no idea, but doubt it somehow. The only thing I wish FF would do is allow you to make a direct shortcut to an internet page on the desktop...maybe it does, but I just haven't found it yet.

Steve.

Thanks Steve, FF has this addon called speed dial its like a bookmark but it allows you to put as many web pages you want on one single page then all you have to do is open your browser pick spee dial and you can view what you created, and then go directly to the page of your choice. see here-----> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4810

Thanks Sol...

Coastal Explorer uses a part of Windows called WinINet to access most of the Internet resources that it uses. Internet Explorer and many other programs also use WinINet, but it is a fundamental part of Windows and does not require the use of Internet Explorer.

However, if you do use Internet Explorer or Windows Mail (Outlook Express) and switch into "Work Offline" mode, then ALL of the programs that use WinINet will be offline. Coastal Explorer does not have a command to switch offline mode, so it's usually easiest to just start Internet Explorer and go back online. Of course, if you never use it or the Windows mail programs, you probably aren't in offline mode anyway...

What sort of trouble connecting are you having? Are you getting an error message? Can you use "Help > Coastal Explorer Network" to get to this website? You mentioned that you don't have a subscription... Actually you do since Coastal Explorer comes with a subscription! However, you must register and activate your copy of Coastal Explorer in order to take advantage of it. Have you done that? (On the Help menu.)

Thank You Brad,

I may be totally off base here but.... and you knew there was gonna be a but. Anyway my copy is activated, here is what is going down.

I open the program and all is well, when I go to --> help--> check for updates I get : CE cannot connect to Rose Point Navigation Systems at this time.

Next I can connect to Coastal Explorer Network and the forums and such no worries.

Finally if I try and get weather from the browser panel--> weather ( text tab )--> I get "the server cannot be contacted" This is where I am not to sure... do I need to be in a specific location on the chart to view a wx forecast? Or is this not available on my copy of CE 2009 v 2.0.9257.1727?

Thanks For your time!

If you are trying to get a Text Weather Forecast for an area where one is not available you'll get a message that indicates that fact. The message you are seeing definitely refers to a problem connecting to our server.

One possible cause of this is having incorrect login information in the "Tools > Options > Coastal Explorer Network" window. The best thing to do there is leave your username and password blank. That will cause Coastal Explorer to use your product activation information to login to the Coastal Explorer Network.

If those values are blank, please send us an application log after trying to get a weather forecast again. That might provide us with a clue about what is going wrong. If the "Help > Send Feedback" command works to send that to us, then it is a login issue rather than a connection issue. If it doesn't work, then you can email the application log to us after following these instructions for getting the log file.

Thanks Again Brad.

I used the send feedback option, let me know if you received it. If not give me an email addy and I can send the log file that way.

Thanks Again This support is the best!

Thanks Sol, Ive got the speed dial feature on FF now. Q. is there a way to get more than one frame of sites on there?

Steve

yes, you can add as many "tabs" as you want... so for instance if you have a bunch of political sites you can name that tab political.... and so on cruising sites give them their own tab and so on... just right click on speeddial and choose options, there are many ways to customize what you want from color of background text size, how many pages on one tab and so on...

bump

solomon320: I sent you an email shortly after your "bump" posting... We got your application log, but it did not contain any clues. If you didn't get my email, please contact support@rosepointnav.com when you get a chance. I'd like to get to the bottom of the problem you're having, but this forum isn't going to be the most efficient way to do that.

Good Afternoon,

Any Ideas on this?...

I guess I am s.o.l thanks for all your time and effort

solomon320: We've sent you a couple emails about this, but you don't seem to be getting them so I guess we need to troubleshoot this in the forum...

We did receive an email from you last week stating that you did not receive my last email. In that you said that you entered a user name and password into the "Options > Synchronization" window. Please clear those fields; they should be completely blank. That will cause Coastal Explorer to log in with your activation information rather than what you enter into that window. This solves about 99% of all connection problems. (In fact we are going to remove that way of logging in altogether soon!)

The other 1% of connection problems have been caused by "proxy" software that may come in the form of an "Internet Accelerator". These programs modify every web request made from your computer and we've found some that modify the requests in such a way that almost all communication between Coastal Explorer and our servers is disabled. If you have something like that, try disabling it and then try getting a weather forecast again.

Finally, it really would be a lot more efficient if we weren't using the forum to try to diagnose this problem. If you could figure out why our emails are not getting through, that would be great. You can also give us a call (425-605-0985) and we can discuss other options, or we can even setup a remote desktop session to we can poke around on your computer to find what's wrong.

Well some time has passed and I haven't been able to contact you guys.... I apologize for that. Just recently I came back to try and figure this out. I must say I am more baffled no than ever. I have done a complete uninstall including clearing out of all registry keys (or at least all the ones I could find). I reinstalled and updated accordingly. I researched Hosts files, and made sure that CE.NET was not entered on mine. I uninstalled my antivirus software. I played with the settings of windows firewall. User accounts is turned off.

What I don't understand is when I enter my username and password to "test" my connection to the CE.NET address it says all is good, the connection works fine. But if I try to check for updates or new charts it doesn't take a millisecond to say cannot connect to server try again later or something like that.

If I change my password by one character and I try to test my connection to the the network it will deny me.... If I leave it blank I still get a successful connection. Finally is I choose to "synchronize" it hangs on the first two options and the last one ... guide book ect it downloads the photos or at least it says it is.... It has something like 800 photos....

This is just a addition to the original post as an updat and to see if anyone has had a similar issue. Thanks for your time Sol...

Please, please, please try to contact Rose Point support directly to resolve this problem! If that is not possible, please post the exact error message you're getting. We might be able to use that to narrow down what might be failing to just a few things. (If we don't know the exact error message, there are dozens of things that might be going wrong.)

Sol, Just call RP and ask for Steven. He's a great bloke and will do everything he can to sort you out, whatever the problem.

Steve (not related)

Thanks all.....I made a page with a bunch of screens of the dialogue boxes that I get. you can see it here---->http://members.cox.net/cwaitkun/ce_connection.html I am pretty sure it is not your software... your stuff is pretty bullet proof. so if this doesn't lead me to a fix then no worries..... I am looking to get a new pc in the future and after all the basic stuff that I will load this will be the first of the major proggies. Thanks for all you help and input.

sol: here are a few things to try:

1. Remove your username and password from the "Main Menu > Options > Synchronization" window. While it appears that you have not mistyped them, making them blank will be one less thing we need to worry about.

2. Re-activate Coastal Explorer using "Main Menu > Help and Product Support > Activate an add-on Product ID". While your Coastal Explorer does appear to be activated, something must be wrong with that activation in order to see what you are seeing in the Synchronize window. (Re-activating Coastal Explorer again on the same computer will not use up one of your allowed activations.)

3. Now try using the Sync command. Things should get past the "Pending" phase now.

Fixed it!..... just a note to let you know that I got it to work. How you may be wondering..... well I booted win vista because it sucks and loaded win 7. There was another program that had the same exact issues CE did in vista for me.... they have their own server and the program would not connect to it. So I backed up all the important stuff and wiped it clean and now we are good to go. Thanks for all your help with this I appreciate your time and effort.

Service like this is what makes a great company and that is rare in this economy.
