I'm running CE 2009 (version 2.0.10140) on WinXP SP2. Hardware is a new Mac Mini running Windows under Boot Camp (ie, natively, not virtualized), with 2GB RAM, Core 2 Duo, and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M.
Networking config is a static IP address on the Ethernet interface and a DHCP address on the wifi interface.
My sensor interface is an Actisense NGT-1 but this problem occurs whether the interface is connected or not.
The issue is that CE is unusably slow right from launch. As soon as I click the button to close that dialog that comes up when you launch the program things get slow. Clicking on menu items or UI elements results in 3-6 seconds of delay before the action is acknowledged. Once I zoom in to the boat things get slower, with up to a minute delay between click and result. Eventually things get so slow that Not Responding appears in the title bar and I have to force quit the program. When the slowness is happening, sensor data IS getting to the application, because the boat icon is in the right place.
I tried uninstalling CE using Add/Remove Programs and reinstalling from the CD. No fix. Updating to current version also did not improve performance.
I have a second helm computer that is configured exactly the same way as the one that is not working. CE runs FINE on that machine.
Any suggestions as to what might be the source of the problem? One thought I had is that a config file which somehow survived the reinstall could be corrupted.
Thanks!
Please send in an application log (Main Menu > Help and Support > Send Feedback); it might hold a clue...
Last week before heading out in the boat I downloaded the latest update to CE 2009. I didn't run CE until I got out in the boat, and it ran sooooo slow, unusable. Today when I started CE (at home) it went to Cruise mode automatically, still running very slow, and I was going to try and send an aplication log also, but I couldn't get out of cruise mode to get to main menu. The boat icon went to my house, but took two or three minutes to get there. Update. I restarted CE without the USB GPS antenna (after a ctrl-alt-del end program) and I am able to navigate around in CE. I don't see a brand name on the antenna, I ordered it from a California company, so it seems the last update I downloaded made this GPS antenna slow the program down (and computer). CE seems to progressively get slower and slower, and seems to eventually lock up. If I now go to main menu in CE without the GPS plugged in and send an application log, will the log give you the information you need? Is there a way to remove the last update so I can use CE again? Last week I tried system restore (I was fishing and wanted CE to work), but it said there were no changes and would not restore to any earlier dates. Now I don't know what to do. HELP! (I am running version 2.0.10140.2035)
Brad, I just sent in an application log referencing this ticket. Can you confirm that you received it?
Incidentally, related to the previous comment I have the problem whether or not the NGT-1 is connected. I have no other USB devices connected besides the touch screen. Disconnecting ALL USB devices before launching CE does not fix the problem.
Thanks!
Bump. Thanks!
Update. I did some surfing and found several sites stating that some programs will run slow when RAM is used up and the 'puter starts using virtual memory. My laptop is not dedicated to CE navigation, so I figured this could possibly be my problem. I went to a site that scans my computer and it said I have two cards of 256MB each and I can upgrade to two 1GB cards. I ordered two 1GB cards, installed only one (site said I can do this) and started up CE, plugged in my GPS (at home), and zip, zam, zowy! CE was speedy and the compass was swing around like a real one. Will be going out fishing today and trying out the faster CE.
Well, I use something called Advanced Systems Care, Downloadable free here:

You can upgrade to the pro version for money, but I havent felt the need to do so. It will do a complete scan and fix of mostly everything and the results on say a 1.66 laptop like this are remarkable. I use it once a week at least, just to keep the tracking cookies and registry in order. I have several others that I have used in the recent past but this seems to be the best of the bunch. Try it, maybe it will sort your problem and fix it. No harm if it doesnt, and no danger as it automatically creates a restore point.
Cheers
Steve.
Steve,
Thanks for the site. I put ASC on this laptop with CE on it and also on my home computer. It really cleaned things up on both. Have no problems with CE now.
Alan
Thats Great Alan! Glad to help.

Hi Steverow, I just tried ASC. Its great Thanks for the tip.
For info: Ive just upgraded to the pro version for about 15 quid, ($19.95). That really gets in deep, and now it's even better plus comes with a turbo charge mode which turns off unused bakground programs, a Firefox optimizer which has really made a difference(Average log on to a shorcutted website like CE.net about 1.5secs). It's not very often I rave about a PC poduct as they are usually much of a muchness, but this is really something else. Plus it has a load of other utilities like 360 pro which is a sort of anti virus which detects malware and spyware before it gets to your computer, disk defraggers (quick) and a host of other useful gems. I have had an annoying trojan on this machine for a while, which though not malicious, required me to keep a Disk in the CD drive always, otherwise it would come up with something called SVChost.exe, and require you to put a disk in. Macafee or Norton or AVG wouldnt shift it, neither would AntimalwarePro...but ASC has done the job resoundingly. Love it.
Steve.
Two thumbs up to Steve! Following your advice I installed the free version and it definitely cleaned up this XP SP3 computer. Runs faster now.
