Chart datum error?
by CaptDuane on 08-Aug-2010

When I first insalled CE there was a problem with different charts showing different loacations of the boat. I was instructed to install the 2.0.9257.1727 update and after doing so everything worked just great. I just did a chart update, which there were many, and now problem is back. I reinstalled the update and it still is not working corectly. I am getting ready to cruise and not sure I can trust the program at all. Duane

Two weeks ago NOAA released an update to raster chart 14500 which is an overview of the Great Lakes. This chart is "special" in that it requires re-projection from polyconic to Mercator in order to line up with everything else in Coastal Explorer. Unfortunately when NOAA updated the chart, they changed things in such a way that Coastal Explorer isn't recognizing that that re-projection is necessary. As a result, portions of that chart are appearing in the wrong locations, particularly in the southern part.

We have changed Coastal Explorer to deal with NOAA's changes are expect to make an update available soon. In the meantime, we suggest disabling chart 14500 in the Chart Portfolio in order to prevent any confusion. Luckily this chart is of an extremely small scale and is not suitable for navigation anyway. Another option is to use vector charts which do not have this problem.

CaptDuane: If the problem you are having is not related to chart 14500, please be a bit more specific about what charts you are using and/or where the problem is.

Good fix

Thanks that fixed the problem. I also disabled some other small scale charts that are not that helpful.
