PCMCIA for Netbook without PCMCIA Slot?
by steverow on 11-Aug-2010

Thought I'd ask this here, as I've been looking for one but cannot find it. My netbook doesn't have a PCMCIA slot, so Ive been looking for a solution that will allow me to use my existing Cards either via USB or SD card slot which my Samsung netbook does have (or RJ45 or 1395 for that matter). Anyone ever seen such a device, is it even made?

Any help appreciated.

Steve

After a quick google search (PCMCIA adapter)

http://sewelldirect.com/U142-USB-to-Cardbus-Adapter-for-3G-High-Speed-Modem-PCMCIA-Cards.asp

No knowlege on how well it works...and it is expensive

Thanks pb, Yep Ive seen that one and can get it over here for around the same price £149.99, but it only does wireless cards not Serial converters or LAN/Network cards. I dont have a problem with 3G access as I do all that on the boat via a 3G Wireless router, but it's me other old legacy cards that I have in mind, of which I have a plethera knocking around that do all sorts of tricks.

Thanks for looking anyway.

Appreciated.

Looks like this is going to be a problem. There seem to be a few about configured for Wireless/3G/RFID stuff, but nothing for standard 16 and 32 bit Cards. There are a few industrial units that are available which require configuration for specific devices, but cost prohibitive. It would be possible to get an adapter from PCMCIA to Express Card and then another from Express card to USB but again cost prohibitive running in at about £250 and I'm not going to spend that on a bunch of old cards...I could get another laptop for that.

So what I thought was going to be simple has turned into a bit of an internet slog. Just have to take my big laptop to the boat (which does of course have PCMCIA) if I want to use a card. There is obviously a problem turning PCI into a protocol that's transparent (or fast enough) on USB.
