Tide and Current 'Auto Pick' - Feature Request

Hi Brad,
I am currently using Coastal Explorer in the galley with a Garmin GPSMAP 5012 top deck. One feature that is really nice is the ability to view tides or currents and have the system automatically show you the closest station to where you are (along with a browser showing you other stations sorted by distance away from your current location). Unless I am missing something in the application, my understanding is that I need to pan around the map looking for a station marker to click on in order to find anything that is close to me.
Anyways, I just thought I would throw it out there.
Cheers, Chris
I think if you go to "nearby places" or places (on the beta), then you should see a list of places come up in the properties window on the right. This includes nearby tide and current stations. Scrolldown to select. It depends how far zoomed in or out you are as to what the list will see.
Hope This helps
Steve
This is fantastic. Thank you!! One question, however...
Is there any way to obtain this information via the planner view, or is it only available via the cruising view?
Yes, this is the info for plan mode, or have I misunderstood what you are asking for?
Cheers
Steve
Perhaps I'm missing something. In Cruising mode (note, I am using the new Beta version), there is a button at the top of the screen titled "Nearby". This provides, as you indicated, both places (on the left side of the menu that pops up) and tide/current/weather information (shown on the right side of the menu).
That being said, I haven't found a 'Places' or 'Nearby' menu when I switch back to planning mode. Is it under a sub menu somewhere?
Cheers, Chris
My apologies. I believe I see what you are referring to. The 'Places' sidebar option in planning mode does show the closest places to where you are. However, when in cruising mode, it is laid out much better. In Planning Mode both tides, weather, places, etc. are all lumped into the same column of data. As a result, if there isn't a tide station (or current station) close to you, your list may not contain anything more than points of interest.
In crusing mode, however, they have separated the two out. On the left side of the menu you have points of interest, and on the right side you have tide/current/weather stations. This, in my opinion, is a much nicer layout - ensuring you are never missing out on your pertinent navigation information.
Thanks again! Chris
Yes I agree Chris that the layout is nicer in cruise mode, but it would be difficult to see how that could be accomplished in Plan Mode, using the present planning GUI, and if it's really neccessary, given that planning is intended for use when one has plenty of time to consider the available options. One for Brad or Steven Perhaps...??
Steve
I definitely agree with you, Steve. Keeping within the existing architecture of the Planning UI, it may be difficult to offer the same feature as is provided in the Crusing Mode. Possibly offering up a vertically split window in the Places screen or somehow splitting up Places and Observations into two separate tabs.
There is the other benefit in Planning Mode of the application automatically picking the closest station to your currently viewed area which, as you mentioned, is certainly usable (given you are planning - and not sailing).
