We had to cross Clarence Strait today in order to get to Ketchikan and let Laura out. The winds have been 25kts or so on our nose with 4 to 6 foot seas confused and lumpy. A coupl stretches wre particularly bad including by Niblack pt, where we had 6-7 foot confused ugly lumps. Glad to be across safely. The worst disaster was our coffee pot flew out out of the coffeemaker, and we spilled coffee all over our countertop and rug.
Left wrangell for zimovia with intention to end up at Meyer's Chuck
We're getting some weather in Chatham Srait. A goot 3-4 foot sea on the forward quarter as we're heading to Baranof. Not danerous or ugly, but not smooth sailing like the rest of our trip so far. The wind is blowing 18-20.
"Bergie Bits" is the name I've often seen to refer to little chunks of ice that are floating in the water. It's quite descriptive.
These range from baseball sized chunks to volkswagen sized, and they're all much heavier than they look. Even the baseball-sized ones can do quite a bit of damage if hit at full speed. Imagine hurling a baseball sized cunk of cement at your hull at 20 miles per hour and you'll get the idea. Now, since we only go about 9 knots, tings are a bit more forgiving, but I still slow down to 2-3 kts if I have any chance of hitting baseballs, 1 kt or less if I'm going to hit basketballs or beachballs, and I will slow to a complete stop for anything bigger, as it's pretty much like ramming into a concrete pier.
First should be a cruise ship Then should be our boat Then should be the dog
